About Us

The Master Instructor Association was developed to promote the learning concepts advocated by the Master Instructor Development Program (MIDP) as administered by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). These concepts include designing, improving, and providing training for law enforcement which utilizes adult learning techniques. These purposes are accomplished through the interaction of individuals who have completed the Master Instructor Development Program training course as accredited by POST*. Activities to further this primary purpose include:

  • Advancement and improvement of all aspects of the law enforcement profession, including, but not limited to, improving learning material and teaching techniques through meetings, seminars, communications, publications, and other programs or activities;
  • Articulating and advocating the training needs and interests of the Association membership before any interested body;
  • Cooperating, on behalf of the membership, with individuals and firms directly on matters involving the education, training, business and affairs of the membership in particular or the law enforcement profession in general, and;
  • Promoting policies and conducting activities of the Association for the betterment of all individuals and/or firms involved in the learning and development of proper investigative techniques and training procedures.

*In 2007 POST began restructuring their various law enforcement instructional training programs under one roof. The four-tier Instructor Development Institute (IDI) provides multi-level, multi-track programs to develop professionalism in the delivery of law enforcement instruction. Beginning with a foundation course and competency verification, subsequent levels of the IDI build in a modular format and provide for advancement and specialization in different tracks of law enforcement training.(More about the IDI can be found on the POST website or by following our IDI link on the left side of this page.) The highest level of the tier, Instructor Certification Program IV, is considered the Master Instructor level.

In December 2003, Master Instructor Association was formed as a nonprofit public benefit corporation. It is not organized for the private gain of any person. It is structured under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law (Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code of 1986) for public and charitable purposes with the specific purpose of this corporation as education - to promote the learning concepts of California POST's Master Instructor Development Program.
